Azofra is a Riojan settlement of Arab origin with 347 inhabitants. Its economic activity is centered mainly on agriculture, mainly vineyards, cereals, beets, and potatoes. It also has some sheep and pig farming.
Located just 14 km east of Santo Domingo de la Calzada and less than 10 km west of Najera, Azofra is a picturesque village on the hills of La Rioja.
According to early documentation, Azofra had a hospital of pilgrims with its own church and cemetery starting in 1168. The church was dedicated to St. Peter.
In the church of Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles, you can find a statue of the pilgrim, and about 5 kilometers from here there is a Cistercian Cane monastery, founded in 1170.
Although the monasteries of Suso and Yuso in San Millán of the Cogolla are away from the pilgrim road, they deserve special attention. They are places worth visiting. In Suso, a scripture is kept that mentions the first words written in Castilian “Las Glosas Emilianenses”, from the 10th century.
