Valcarlos

Valcarlos is located on the border with Lower Navarre, about 64 km from Pamplona. It is situated in a narrow and abrupt valley, surrounded by forests and crossed by numerous streams.

The village takes its name from Charlemagne, who, having finished a campaign on the Iberian peninsula, was crossing the Pyrenees when his rear guard was killed at Roncesvalles.

Iglesia de Santiago

Inside the church, you can find a sculpture of Santiago Matamoros (‘Moor slayer’ or ‘St. James the Moor-slayer’).
