Burguete-Auritz

Burguete, as well as Espinal (the next settlement on the route), are situated in one of the wildest and most breathtaking areas of the Pyrenees, according to Ernest Hemingway who spent quite some time here (and described his experience in The Sun Also Rises).

The plain around Burguete and Roncesvalles was traditionally referred to as ‘Roncesvalles’. Later the name was applied to the village that is now Burguete. After the collegiate church in Roncesvalles was founded, it became necessary to distinguish between the village and the hospital, so the former ended up being called Burguete or ‘Burguito’, due to its small size.
