Zubiri (meaning ‘village of the bridge’ in Basque) is the main town in the Esteribar Valley, and although it has undergone some transformations recently, it still conserves some features from the 18th century.
Zubiri has grown a lot in the last decades, and today, it has a great variety of services for the pilgrim: doctor’s office, tourist office, pharmacy, bank, shops, and Albergues.
Puente de la Rabia
The ‘Rabies Bridge’ crossing the river Arga was constructed in the 11th century. Tradition has it that the workers had difficulties erecting the central pillar. They dug into the rock underneath, and what they found were the remains of Santa Quiteria, patron of those suffering from rabies. There was consequently a popular belief that if an animal with rabies were led around its central pillar three times, it would be cured.
The large building to the right just before the bridge probably used to be a leprosarium.
